Main Presenter: David Spurgeon

David taught in primary schools in the UK and Australia for 7 years. He lectured at Sydney College of
Advanced Education in Dance, Drama, Communications and English for 13 years before joining UNSW. He
wrote, launched, directed and lectured on the University's B.A. (Dance) B.Ed. double degree for its first 12
years before retiring as a Senior Lecturer in 2006. David has had a lifelong appreciation of music and has
always sought to promote good music education within the dance curriculum. He is particularly interested in
dance improvisation and ways of encouraging non-dancers to move, dance and create dances. David has a
M.A (Hons 1) from UNSW; has presented at many conferences and has been on the NSW Board of Studies
Dance Syllabus Committee and Dance Examiners Committee. He is the author of two dance books, one for
teachers and one for students. David is particularly interested in those aspects of the dance curriculum that
are likely to be less familiar to music educators. He envisages the course will have 70% practical activities
with the rest of the time devoted to discussion, reflection and the viewing of filmed dances.
